Sandcastle
This world-class, cliff-side, Eastern Cape extravaganza features authentic African design. Sandcastle is a unique and innovative structure which holds a place in the history of the Eastern Cape and indeed South Africa. Beach sand, white cement, lime and pigments were used for walls inside and out and the result is a low undulating arrangement of buildings which overlook the dunes and beach but are in no way obtrusive.

Inside, the decorative signature is not overtly African but the palette of natural ochres invokes an influence. Decoration includes kelim rugs, Mexican chairs, an array of African woods used for furniture and eclectic artworks.

The lounge is the ideal place to enjoy a drink from the walk-in bar and watch the magnificent African sunsets, or on colder days enjoy the open wood-burning fireplace located in a sunken conversation pit which is a great spot from which to access the small library. On a mezzanine level above, the study has a fax machine and computer with on-line internet connection. The games room is equipped with the latest hi-tech home theatre audio visual technology including a rear projection 62-inch screen with satellite, DVD, video and 5.1 Nicam stereo surround-sound.

On the ocean side of the house the covered patio overlooks a large heated spill-over swimming pool and offers 180 degree views of the beach and ocean beyond. On windy days the central courtyard protects bathers in the small heated plunge pool; also located here is a pizza oven for alfresco dining and the whole area is partially shaded by a patio roof of slender branches.
